Today we’d like to talk to you about one of our favorite things to do in Bern: swimming! Whether in the sparkling waters of the Aare or in one of the city’s free outdoor pools, Bern offers plenty of opportunities to cool off on hot summer days.
Swimming in the Aare: An unforgettable experience
Let’s start with what is probably the most iconic swimming experience in Bern: the Aare swim. The Aare, which flows leisurely through the city, is the perfect place to cool off in summer. Many locals and visitors use the Aare to let themselves drift while enjoying the breathtaking view of the city.
The best thing about swimming in the Aare? It’s completely free! Whether you’re just looking for a quick dip or planning a longer trip on the river, swimming in the Aare is an unforgettable experience that you shouldn’t miss out on.
Free outdoor pools in Bern
If you prefer to swim in a traditional swimming pool, you’re also in luck here in Bern. The city has several free outdoor pools that are suitable for both families and individuals. Here are our personal favorites:
1st Marzilibad
The Marzilibad is a popular outdoor pool right on the banks of the Aare. With a spacious sunbathing lawn, a children’s pool and a 50-meter pool, the Marzilibad is the perfect place to spend a sunny day. The facilities are clean and well-maintained, and best of all, entry is free!
The Marzilibad also offers various activities for children and adults, including volleyball courts, table tennis tables and a small snack bar where you can buy snacks and drinks. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, and thanks to its riverside location, the Marzilibad also offers spectacular views of Bern’s old town.
2nd Weyerli
The Weyerli outdoor pool is located just outside the city center of Bern and offers a relaxed atmosphere with views of the surrounding hills. With a large swimming pool, a water slide and a separate children’s area, the Weyerli is ideal for families. And of course admission is free here too!
In addition to swimming, the Weyerli outdoor pool also offers other leisure facilities such as beach volleyball courts, table tennis tables and a playground for younger children. There is also a cafeteria where you can stock up on snacks and refreshments to keep you energized throughout the day.
Whether you choose the Marzilibad or the Weyerli, one thing is certain: you can spend a wonderful summer’s day in Bern’s free outdoor pools without having to put a strain on your wallet. Pack your swimming trunks and come along – the water is already there!
